Why Stucco Fails (And Why Most Repairs Miss the Real Issue)

Stucco itself is one of the most durable and weather-resistant exterior systems when installed correctly. The majority of stucco failures are not caused by the stucco — they’re caused by improper details behind it.

Common causes of stucco damage include:

  • Missing or improperly installed kickout flashing

  • Inadequate head flashing with end dams

  • Poor or failing caulking at windows, doors, and penetrations

  • Improper integration with roofing and chimney systems

  • Trapped moisture from incorrect repairs or shortcuts

If these details are ignored, moisture gets behind the stucco and leads to rot, mold, staining, and structural damage.
